Helping My Brothers!

By: Tommy Sotomayor

So, last nite I met up with a guy who has been a fan of my radio show for a little over a year now.  This brother was in town here in Atlanta GA and asked could he have a sit down with me.  In the process I said sure lets meet at The Spinning Pie On Peters Street.  The Young mans name is Robin Lester and he is actually into bodybuilding as you can see from the photo below where he put me to shame.  The coolest thing about meeting him was finding out that his girl was pregnant and that this week they find out the sex of the baby.  Now this is where the shock came in, he let me know that if they have a girl that he is going to give her my daughters name “Alexandria”  How freaking cool is that?

While we were eating, there was a guy at the bar who saw me and walked up letting me know how much he loved my videos and to offer words of encouragement.  When the guy went back to the bar I told our waitress to put everything he was eating and drinking on my tab.

After this, Robin and I saw 4 guys sitting at a 2 person table so at that moment I offered them to have our table as we were finished and I was going to get my hair cut.

One of the guys noticed who I was and then we all started talking, this is when I started filming the conversation.  I really enjoyed talking to the young men and finally took my talking ass on to get my hair cut!

I said my goodbyes to Mr Lester and went to get my hair cut by this young man who I promised I would come back by but havent been able to make it since last December!

He has cut my hair before and I really enjoyed talking to him.  When Lana and I were there with my daughter he was very nice to us both and always spit knowledge.  He is one of the hotep brothers and as I got to know him, he was telling me his stories of moving to ATL and living with his sister.

He described how sometimes his sister was making life living there hard and I told him that no matter if the woman is black or other, it is very difficult for a woman to respect a grown man that lives with them, its just how it is.  Now this conversation took place back in December of 2013!  Well, last nite he was letting me know that he took my advice, saved up enough money and now has his own place.  This was fantastic but I was sleepy as hell so I kept dozing off while he was speaking.

As I got up to leave after getting my hair cut, he refused to take my money instead offering to go over to 255 and buy me a drink.  I was too tired but thought, why not since I never get out so we sat there and talked for a while when the bartender decided that she wanted to give me free drinks based on the knowledge I was sharing with the people at the bar.

This was a black woman with dreads and from outer appearance you would think she was gay but my words still rang very true to her I guess since she gave me free drinks.

Right then, the group of young men from the spinning pie came in and I told the bartender that all of their drinks were on me! She looked and said are you sure because their group at this moment had grown up to about 10 people.

I said sure because I am basically giving back the free drinks that you gave me.  (see every time someone gives me something, I believe I should then do something for someone else its how everyone in the world should be if you ask me) By this time it was nothing but black people chillin and having a great time with each other with no arguing hate or fighting.

The barber then proceeded to tell me how hes glad to have his own spot and is trying to save up some money so he can go spend his birthday with his brother in Miami.  He also asked me if I would like to come speak to some of his people down there and I thought, wow, what a great offer but I will be in LA that weekend for my daughters spring break.  I thought to myself though, wait, if this guy is actually doing what I say do, what type of person would I be if I didn’t put my money where my mouth is?

So thats when I decided that the best birthday gift for him would be a round trip ticket to MIAMI!

As we sat there, I am sure he thought I was full of BS because I told him to email me his name and date of birth and I would buy him the ticket.  So what I did was logged on to Priceline.com and let him buy the tickets himself on my account.  At this moment he gave me a big hug at the bar and just kept saying thank you so so much!

I tell this story because it is a night of black people being selfless with each other and this is what a real community is.  I may not speak the way people like me to but you need to ask the people who dont like me, what have they done to make anyones life better?  See I don’t have to be in the project hallways talking about how I be In the projects all day!!! Have you ever seen a Tommy Sotomayor Hater in the streets or doing 1 thing for anyone one black?  Have you ever seen 1 person thank them for how their life was made better because they messed with me all day on line?  Moral of the story, hate me all you want, but stop using your care for black people as the excuse when you do nothing for black people at all!  My work speaks for itself!
