The disappearance of Carlee Russell was declared “a hoax,” according to Hoover police Chief Nick Derzis.

Now authorities are investigating possible criminal charges.

During a news conference held by Alabama authorities on Monday, a statement from Russell’s attorney admitted she was not kidnapped and did not encounter a toddler along Interstate 459.

“There was no kidnapping on Thursday, July 13, 2023. My client did not see a baby on the side of the road,” read a statement from Russell’s attorney, Emery Anthony. “My client did not leave the Hoover area when she was identified as a missing person.”

The statement confirms Russell admitted to lying about what happened, police said. Russell apologized to the people who helped in the search and her friends and family.

“My client apologizes for her actions to this community, the volunteers who were searching for her, to the Hoover Police Department and other agencies as well and to her friends and family. We ask for your prayers for Carlee as she addresses her issues and attempts to move forward, understanding that she made a mistake in this matter,” the statement concluded.

According to her lawyer, she had not left the Hoover area when she was reported missing and received no assistance from anyone.

“My client did not have any help in this incident — this was a single act done by herself. My client was not with anyone or any hotel with anyone from the time she was missing,” he said.

Police continue to investigate that part of Russell’s story.

“We still don’t know where she was for those 49 hours,” Derzis said.
