A New Smyrna Beach High School teacher is being charged with having unlawful sex with a minor.

Authorities arrested Megan Parris and said she has been under investigation since March.

Parris was removed from the classroom at that time and was still working for Volusia County Public Schools as of Thursday.

Authorities said they found evidence that Parris had off-campus sexual encounters with a 16-year-old student.

Investigators said the 16-year-old told them Parris was his teacher last year, but this year he went to her office for help with school work.

According to an arrest report, the pair began messaging each other on Instagram and texted a few times.

Parris is accused of sending the teenager two nude photos of herself through Instagram’s messaging system.

The student told authorities the pair had kissed once at Parris’ home and shortly after had sex in her car on two different occasions at a beach front park off Sapphire Road.

New Smyrna Beach High School’s principal told WESH 2 News that Parris had passed a background check before being hired and nothing criminal or suggestive had been uncovered.

According to the police report, Parris and the teenager were frequently alone in her off, while another student told detectives she was once asked to leave and area because she needed alone time with the teenage boy.

The report also said Parris told at least two of her friends about her relationship with the student, telling one that she was having marital troubles and needed attention.

She allegedly told the other friend that she loved the 16-year-old.

Parris is on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of her criminal case. A spokesperson with the school district said they would do their own investigation .
