‘Deplorable and sickening’: 7 charged in kidnapping, sodomy, murder of Birmingham mother

Multiple arrests have been made in the kidnapping and murder of Birmingham mother Mahogany Jackson.

On Wednesday, the Birmingham Police Department held a press conference announcing that 7 people had been arrested in connection to Jackson’s death on charges including felony murder, kidnapping, sodomy, and assault.

Jackson was reported missing last Sunday, but before her family and friends were able to organize a search party to look for her, police discovered that they were dealing with a homicide.

Police confirm Jackson had texted her family on Sunday, Feb. 25, asking for help and saying she had been kidnapped.

Early the next day, police found her body in the 1700 block of Laurel Avenue. Investigators determined at the scene that she had been shot.

Police say that they were able to find Mahogany’s body, as well as the people suspected of kidnapping and killing her, thanks to the assistance of the public.

On Wednesday, detectives were able to obtain arrest warrants for the following suspects:

• First-degree kidnapping
• First-degree sodomy
• Second-degree assault with injury

• Felony murder
• First-degree kidnapping
• First-degree sodomy

Teja Lewis, 25

• Felony murder
• Second-degree assault – injury with a weapon

Francis Harris, 25

• Capital murder in first-degree sodomy
• Capital murder in first-degree kidnapping

Si’Niya McCall, 23

• Felony murder
• First-degree kidnapping
• First-degree sodomy

Jeremiah McDowell, 18

• Capital murder in first-degree sodomy
• Capital murder in first-degree kidnapping

Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond says the suspects filmed portions of their crimes.

“The facts of this case are deplorable and sickening,” said Thurmond. “Saddest of all, they were made public by the suspects’ decision to videotape portions of this horrific act.”

While police hope to shield the Jackson family from the more grotesque details of the attack, they confirmed that she was sexually assaulted.

“I served a number of years in the homicide unit,” said Thurmond. “This is undoubtedly one of the most heinous acts I have seen in my career.

All seven suspects are currently in the custody of the Jefferson County Jail and are being held without bond.
