Bank robberies are not entirely uncommon, but one Monday may have been a first.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said a woman in an electric wheelchair robbed a downtown Regions Bank by threatening to kill everyone there.
“It’s the first one I have had where a suspect is in an electric wheelchair and does what she does,” Lt. Derrick Boucher said.
Kenyeitta La-Key Gordon, 39, of East 48th St., was arrested a short time later and charged with strong-arm robbery and possession of drug paraphernalia and remains held without bail, according to jail records.
Police said a Black woman in a wheelchair with short blond hair wearing a black and silver COVID-19 mask and covered in a red blanket came into the bank at 51 W. Bay St. at 11:50 a.m. She handled some banking business with a teller, then asked to withdraw some money from her account, her arrest report said.
The teller said she could not do that type of transaction. The woman began cursing at the teller, demanding money as she said this is a robbery and “was going to kill everyone,” the Sheriff’s Office said. There were four employees and two other customers inside at the time.
The teller gave the woman money, and she left in the wheelchair, the Sheriff’s Office said. The bank identified Gordon from the ID card she used to access her account, and officers began searching for her, the report said. Officers arrested Gordon when they found her in her wheelchair about a mile from the bank.
The report did not specify her disability. Duval County jail records show Gordon has 12 previous arrests.
