ABC 15 Investigates: Police reports show Jason Pope’s criminal history

FLORENCE, S.C. (WPDE) — A well-known Florence man charged with human trafficking earlier this year may have had possible victims further back than deputies are currently investigating, according to records handed over to ABC 15.

Jason Roger Pope, 42, popularly known as “DJ KID,” was charged with with three counts of trafficking in persons, three counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, second-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor, promoting prostitution of a minor, and kidnapping back on August 29.

Warrants say Pope recruited women and underage girls and had sex with them on various occasions between September 2017 and July 2019, providing the victims with money and gifts in exchange. They also say he held some victims against their wills in Darlington and Florence in order to have them perform sex acts.

The warrants say Pope knew some of the victims were under the age of 18, although they did not say if any of the women held against their wills were underage.

The additional accusations are included in incident and supplemental reports obtained by ABC 15 Investigates through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request.

ABC 15 asked for all of the incidents involving Pope about which police wrote reports, no matter how he was involved. The Florence County Sheriff’s Office provided 14 incidents ranging from December 2011 to April 2019.

Pope was listed as the subject or suspect in nine of the incidents and the complainant or victim in four. He was involved in one of them as a third party.

Five of the nine reports where Pope was listed as the subject were sex-related. Only one, filed on Christmas Eve in 2011, involved an adult woman. In them, he was accused of sending her pornographic texts.

The first of the four involving underage girls happened shortly before that on December 4, 2011. The report says two girls aged 13 and 16 walked into a hospital and told doctors they had unprotected sex with the then-34 year old. The girls told police Pope had given them marijuana and money in exchange for the sex.

An investigator was called to the scene, but the public portion of the report ends. Prior to this story being published, Florence County Deputy Sheriff Glenn Kirby said both deputies listed in the report no longer worked for the department and staff was trying to figure out how and why the case was resolved.

The next time a sex-related allegation emerged was six years later. On December 13, 2017, a report was filed after a 16-year-old girl called deputies and threatened to commit suicide.

She told officers Pope had been paying her for sex and blackmailing her into performing additional sex acts. At the time, she told deputies she had cut off contact with Pope for two weeks, during which he had been spreading information about her on social media.

She also told police Pope repeatedly paid 15 and 16-year-old girls for sex and filmed the encounters. She went on to say he recruited girls by handing flyers out promoting his DJ work and then bribed them.

Six months later, a Florence mother called deputies and said Pope was luring young girls on Facebook and Snapchat with promises of prizes. She told them he had been communicating with her 15-year-old daughter.

The most explosive of the reports came just a few days later, when a female family member of Pope contacted deputies and said Pope was having sex with minors.

According to the incident report, the family member told deputies Pope paid the girls for sex and posted about it on social media. She reported it had been happening “for a long period of time,” but had recently been getting worse.

She told officers she had screen shots of pornographic posts and said she personally knew some of the man’s victims and her friends were harassing her about Pope’s behavior. She also told them she had thought about committing suicide if something wasn’t done.

The family member told officials Pope occasionally sent her explicit messages and touched her bottom when he hugged her.

Deputies said the tipster’s mother was also present for the interview and “was concerned about the situation for some time.”

Deputies said they reviewed some of the messages and confirmed they were explicit. An investigator later wrote that two other family members could be considered victims because they were connected on social media with Pope who “posted videos and pictures of obscene materials for…minors to view.” (Editor’s note: we have modified the quote to protect potential victims’ identities).

The more recent three reports fall within the current investigation’s time frame. It’s unclear why it took more than a year for Pope to be arrested after the accusations surfaced.

The non-sexual reports generated by the sheriff’s office were for various other incidents. According to one report, Pope was arrested after deputies discovered marijuana and large sums of cash in his home. In another, Pope was accused of following an ex-girlfriend.

Pope also called deputies several times after his home and car were broken into. In one incident, he said $500 had been taken out of his car.

According to the reports, the last time Pope called police was in 2017.

A SLED background check shows his record actually starting in 1995 with a conviction of impersonating a police officer.

In 1996, he was convicted of promoting prostitution with a minor and was sentenced to jail time, but the time was suspended.

From 1997 to 2011, he was convicted on a myriad of charges including ones like disorderly conduct and unlawful use of a telephone.

In 2018, he was convicted of cruelty to children and was sentenced to the time he had already served in jail.

Pope is currently at the Florence County Detention Center on his current charges. His bond was denied.

The case will be prosecuted by the S.C. Attorney General‘s Office.

Wow, this is one of the craziest stories to crop up, in a while. The hip hop world is alluring and welcoming. Promises of glitz and glamour are enticing, bringing in people of all races and backgrounds, as almost all are welcomed.

Local rap scenes have become highly profitable, as small town DJs and promoters have found ways to make money. Some use their industry connections and local appeal to build stable businesses. Again, the allure of glitz and glamour open doors for other activities.

In Florence, South Carolina, Jason Roger Pope, aka DJ Kid, became one of those success stories. However, his life is anything but successful, according to his arrest report. This, along with the news reports of him spreading AIDS to unknowing African-American women, intentionally, have people upset.
