Indiana middle school shooting in Noblesville leaves teacher, student injured; suspect in custody

A teacher and a student have been injured and a student has been detained after a shooting at Noblesville West Middle School in Indiana, authorities said.

A male student has been detained in connection with the shooting, Noblesville Police Chief Kevin Jowitt said at a press conference Friday morning.

Police received a call of an active shooter at the schools at about 9:06 a.m. Eastern Time.

IU Health Methodist Hospital confirmed that they are treating an adult shooting victim and Riley Hospital for children confirmed that they are treating one teenage victim. The ages and conditions of the victims have not been released.

Indiana State Indiana State Police Sergeant John Perrine said the families of the victims have been notified and the students were being taken to Noblesville High School, where parents could pick up their children.

Police said that Noblesville West Middle School has been cleared. Police are investigating a threat at Noblesville High School but said it is just a threat.

“We have no reason to believe there is any kind of a threat connected to this incident anywhere else,” Jowitt said. “We’re also, however, aware of a secondary threat that’s been made at Noblesville High School. We have multiple officers and a command post established at Noblesville High School and are diligently ensuring the safety of students and staff there. We have not received any information that this has been anything other than a communicated threat and again we are securing Noblesville High School and taking steps to ensure that it stays secure.”

Noblesville West Middle School is located about 27 miles north of Indianapolis.

A middle school boy allegedly opened fire at an Indiana school Friday morning, police said, leaving a teacher and another student injured –- the latest in a string of school shootings this year.

The two victims were taken to local hospitals after the shooting at Noblesville West Middle School, which was reported just after 9 a.m., according to Noblesville police. Their conditions were not immediately available.

Families of the victims have been notified, said Indiana State Police spokesman Sgt. John Perrine.

The suspect, a male student, is in custody, Noblesville police said.

Middle school students were seen running from the building to waiting buses.

The school, located about 27 miles north of Indianapolis, has been cleared, officials said.

“A secondary threat” was also made at Noblesville High School, Noblesville Police Chief Kevin Jowitt said.

“We have not received any information that this has been anything other than a communicated threat,” Jowitt said. “We are securing the high school and taking steps to make sure that it stays secure.”

“All this says to me is insanity has hit Indiana,” one man, whose wife’s grandson attends the school, told ABC affiliate RTV in Indianapolis.

The man, who described the shooting as “chaos” for his family, said the boy texted his mother, “come get me.”

Vice President Mike Pence, an Indiana native, said he is “praying for the victims.”

“To everyone in the Noblesville community — you are on our hearts and in our prayers,” he wrote on Twitter. “Thanks for the swift response by Hoosier law enforcement and first responders.”

Gov. Eric Holcomb said he is monitoring the shooting.

Friday morning’s shooting comes one week after a teenage boy allegedly stormed his Texas high school, shooting and killing 10 and wounding 13 others.
