Family holds vigil for woman killed during viral video, pleads with people to put the guns down
The mother of an Algiers woman killed during a viral video of a fight said her daughter knew the woman police said pulled the trigger.
Monday, Brittany Ussin, 25, was seen in a viral video as two women were fighting near McDonogh Park in Algiers. According to her mother Montrice Ussin, the 25-year-old was not involved in the fight but died after being shot.
Ussin’s family told WDSU the two women knew each other with some saying their families have been close over the years.
During Thursday’s vigil, the Ussin’s aunt Cotrena McIntyre said she was relieved after the person police say killed her niece was arrested less than 24 hours after the shooting.
“I fell to the ground. I could not believe that this happened. You know that they were able to apprehend the shooter so quick,” McIntyre said.
Video posted to social media shows women fighting before a gunshot is heard. The family said as difficult as it is to lose their loved one, seeing no one help after the shooting adds to their pain.
“All that time, they’re out there fighting, not one person,” McIntyre said.
The New Orleans Police Department arrested Nayiondra Woolridge, 32, in connection to the shooting and charged her with second-degree murder, battery and aggravated assault with a firearm.
“You continued to pull that trigger and know that a bullet was going to come out after it was jammed two times. You knew at that point what you intended to do,” McIntyre said.
The family said Ussin was an unexpected twin who was born premature, calling her their special baby who grew up to help those around her.
“She was full of love, full of life. She loved unconditional and she loved her sisters. She also loved her brother and her babies,” Ussin said.
McIntyre said her niece had the biggest smile and as they remember the woman they say she had so much life to live, they are pleading with people to put the guns down and stop the violence.
“They should have been able to talk this out. They should’ve been able to find a better solution for their disagreement,” McIntyre said.
“She had six beautiful children who she loved dearly, held close to her heart and it’s so unfortunate that my grandchildren will have to go through life without her,” Ussin said.
