A year after Daunte Culpepper went down with a career-altering knee injury, the Minnesota Vikings were hoping to find his replacement in the 2006 NFL Draft.

New Vikings head coach Brad Childress wanted someone who he could mold into the franchise’s next great quarterback. So in 2006, Childress and Minnesota decided to take a chance on a kid named Tarvaris Jackson from a small school in Alabama.

The Vikings thought they landed a guy who could lead them to even more success than what Culpepper was able to do. However, that’s not how it turned out.

Sadly, Jackson was recently involved in a car accident and the former Minnesota quarterback has passed away at the age of 36 according to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport on Monday.

His last NFL snap came back in 2015 as a member of the Seattle Seahawks. Following his time in the league, Jackson had picked up coaching and was the quarterbacks coach at Tennessee State before his passing according to Rapoport.

With the Vikings, Jackson got his first big opportunity in 2007 to be a starter during his second year in the NFL. His numbers didn’t blow anyone away (nine touchdowns, 12 interceptions), but he was able to lead Minnesota to wins in eight of his 12 starts.

During his third year with the Vikings, Jackson appeared in his first career playoff game. However, he ended up completing just 42.9 percent of his passes for 164 yards, no touchdowns, and one interception in Minnesota’s first-round loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

With things not really working out with their young quarterback under center, the Vikings jumped at the opportunity to sign Brett Favre in 2009. Jackson remained in Minnesota as a backup during both of Favre’s seasons with the team before he was given another opportunity to be a starting signal-caller with the Seattle Seahawks in 2011.

His tenure in Seattle didn’t turn out any better than it did with the Vikings. Jackson only lasted one season as the Seahawks’ starting quarterback before he was traded to the Buffalo Bills. He then spent a year with the Bills before returning Seattle to finish his career as a backup for Russell Wilson.
