Roommates: Stevante Clark changed after brother’s shooting death

The brother of Stephon Clark, who was shot and killed by Sacramento police, was arrested Thursday morning on a felony threat charge, according to Sacramento County Jail records.

Stevante Clark, 25, was taken into custody around 10 a.m. at a house in the 900 block of Acacia Avenue, Sacramento police said.

He was booked into Sacramento County Jail on a felony charge of threats to commit a crime resulting in death or great bodily injury, felony assault, felony vandalism and abusing the 911 emergency line, police said.

Stevante Clark was apologetic when he spoke to KCRA from jail hours after being booked.

“Tell them I’ll pay for everything. I’m sorry,” Clark said.

Although police have not released details of what led up to Clark’s arrest, Alex Rouska and Samantha Urke said they are the victims.

“It’s been very stressful, been very stressful,” Urke said.

According to the couple, Clark moved into their Acacia Avenue home in November to rent a room.

“He came and filled the spot. He was quiet,” Rouska said. “Paid his rent on time and was perfectly fine until what happened to his brother.”

Stephon Clark was shot and killed March 18 in his grandparents’ backyard in south Sacramento. Officers were responding to a call about a person breaking car windows at night, when a Sacramento County sheriff’s helicopter led officers to Clark, who began to run away. The two responding officers believed he was armed and fired 20 rounds at Clark, police said. Investigators later discovered Clark was holding a cellphone.

Rouska said things with Stevante Clark started to change recently. He said that Clark sometimes exhibited erratic behavior. According to the couple, Clark threatened them on Monday.

“He’s like, ‘You tell that (expletive) to not disrespect me again or I’m going to kill her,’” Rouska said.

The couple called police more than a dozen times, filed a restraining order and said they were eventually put in a hotel.

Rouska said Clark destroyed their home while they were away.

When Clark was asked about the claims made by the couple, he said, “I don’t have a lawyer, I think. I don’t have a lawyer for all this.”

He later said, “They have all my clothes there. They have all my electronics are there. They ate all my food.”

Clark also said from jail that someone was trying to kill him and that person tried to break into the house. He also responded to concerns about his mental health.

“I’m a mental health advocate,” Clark said.

When asked why he is in jail, Clark said, “I think everybody should love everybody.”

The couple said they spent Thursday cleaning their home. They said the landlord has given them until the end of the month to move out.

Of his former roommate Rouska said, “It’s frustrating because I don’t villainize him. He’s hurt and he needs help — and at the bottom of it all that’s what matters.”

The Sacramento Police Department has requested no bail for Clark, citing the seriousness of his crime and public protection, jail records show.

Detectives are continuing to investigate the case.

Clark’s arrest comes on the same day Black Lives Matter protesters marched through downtown Sacramento to deliver 100,000 signed petitions demanding the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office file charges against the officers who killed Stephon Clark.

Police said Thursday the officers have returned to work but are not on patrol duty.

Stevante Clark is set to appear in court Friday afternoon.
