Man Threatens to Kill Ex after Break-in: Police
The suspect drove all the way from Rochelle to commit the burglary, and Joliet police were able to listen in on one of his threatening calls, Cmdr. Rich Demick said.
A Rochelle man who broke into his former girlfriend’s Joliet apartment and then called her at work to taunt and threaten her was arrested Wednesday, Joliet Police Cmdr. Rich Demick said.
Lee Owens, 42, apparently made the 140-mile round trip, arriving at the woman’s home Wednesday afternoon only to be angered that she was not there, Demick said. He called her from inside the house at about 1:45 p.m. and told her, “You’re lucky you’re not here right now because I was going to kill you,” Demick said.
The woman called her current boyfriend and asked him to verify that Owens had been in the apartment before calling the police and her landlord about the damaged door.
She was speaking with the police at her residence when Owens called her again and made more threats, which the officers were able to hear, Demick said.
Detectives put out a bulletin for Owens’ arrest to various places the suspect might have headed, and Rochelle police were able to apprehend him fairly quickly. While being driven back to Joliet, he admitted that he pushed his way into the victim’s apartment door but that the damage and the incident itself were being exaggerated, Demick said.Subscribe
Police had no information on how long Owens dated the woman, when they broke up or if they had previous fights in which the police were called. Nothing inside the home was broken or damaged, Demick said.
In addition to be charged with residential burglary, Owens also faces counts of knowingly damaging property and criminal trespass. He’s being held in the Will County jail in lieu of $100,000 bond.
