Library rampage causes $10,000 in damage
DALLAS — Police arrested 27-year-old Marquise Wiley after he ransacked a public library branch.
The fit of rage lasted more than 20 minutes and set the branch back more than $10,000 in damage.
The incident happened early Friday afternoon, and by Monday morning, librarians at the Timberglen Branch Library were still working to get organized.
“A little spring clean up,” said Jo Giudice the Director of Dallas Public Libraries. “It’s been an emotional journey for everyone, very traumatic.”
Marcus Finnell was there and captured the man, a library patron going on his rampage.
“He’s just throwing the computers out, and you can hear what he is saying,” Finnell said.
The sound is a book crashing to the ground. The video cuts off before he destroys a computer monitor.
“They were trying to be as calm as possible, but I could tell they were scared,” Finnell said referring to the library staff.
Computers smashed, books were thrown everywhere, and a glass conference room door was destroyed. Library staff said he trashed the library for the better part of 25 minutes, no police in sight. Officers arrested the man shortly after he walked out of the building.
Damage was clearly done. No one was hurt.
“I just want to say that the staff in the building did an amazing job. They did exactly what library protocol calls for. They did not engage this person who was being verbally abusive, and they just protected the citizens in the building and got them out through the emergency exit,” Giudice said.
As for the 27-year-old behind the vandalism, a police spokesperson says he remains in a mental care facility after suffering from some sort of mental breakdown. So far, no charges have been filed.
