LANCASTER COUNTY, Penn. (WKRC) – A Wendy’s manager was charged after she allegedly created a “ghost employee” to steal over $20,000.
According to Business Insider, Linda Johnson, a former general manager at a Wendy’s in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, allegedly created a “ghost employee” named William Bright so that she could steal the wages. Per the outlet, Johnson manually logged 128 shifts for Bright at the location she managed. Lancaster Online reported that it was a task only the general manager could perform.
The former manager continued stealing wages for nearly a year, with the “ghost employee” being paid $19,898 between June 2021 and May of 2022, per Business Insider.
According to WPMT, employees reported their suspicions to authorities, which launched an investigation into the matter.
“A forensic audit was performed, and it showed that a total loss to Utica National Insurance Company as a result of this incident was $15,846.91. The ghost employee’s, William Bright’s, employment spanned 22 bi-weekly pay periods; over that period, the gross pay was $19,898.15,” the Manheim Township Police Department wrote in a statement obtained by Daily Voice.
According to the Daily Voice, authorities interviewed employees at the Wendy’s location and none of the individuals questioned recalled a “William Bright.” Per WPMT, Johnson spoke with officers on a video call on April 19, and allegedly admitted to adding the “ghost employee” and creating shifts for him that were never worked, allegedly going on to say that the paychecks were deposited straight into her CashApp account.
Per the Daily Voice, Johnson allegedly told police that she was using the money to “help care for her children.”
Sergeant Barry Waltz with the Manheim Township Police Department told Lancaster Online that Bright was a real person that Johnson knew, although he never had a job at Wendy’s or a legitimate record with the company. Per the outlet, authorities had no personal details about Bright and did not investigate him as a co-conspirator.
The restaurant’s insurer paid out nearly $16,000 for the incident, per Lancaster Online. Johnson was charged on July 7, 2023 with one count of theft by deception and her location was unknown for a period of time before she turned herself in on August 8, 2023, according to Daily Voice, which reported Johnson was released on $2,500 unsecured bail.
News of Johnson’s alleged act recently went viral after it was posted to X by Daily Loud.
The post has since garnered over eight million views since being posted Friday.
