Brooklyn Nets All-Star guard Kyrie Irving would like to see the NBA’s current logo — a silhouette of Jerry West — replaced to honor Kobe Bryant, posting a picture on Instagram Wednesday of how it could look.
Irving posted the photo with the caption, “Gotta Happen, idc what anyone says. BLACK KINGS BUILT THE LEAGUE.”
Vanessa Bryant, who recently criticized rapper Meek Mill for an insensitive lyric about her late husband, was quick to support Irving’s mock-up logo, writing: “love this.”
Irving and Bryant became close when Irving first entered the league and Bryant was a member of the 2012 USA Olympic basketball team. A YouTube videofrom 2012 shows the two playing 1-on-1 together with the younger Irving jokingly talking trash to the veteran Bryant.
After Bryant’s death last January, the NBA commemorated his legacy in multiple ways including players wearing Bryant’s No. 24 and his daughter’s No. 2 at the NBA All-Star Game. More than three million people have signed a Change.org petition started by a fan that called for the NBA to change the logo to Bryant shortly after his death.
One caveat to the idea of Bryant becoming the logo is that the NBA hasn’t officially acknowledged that its current logo, which has been used since 1969, is based on West. The logo’s designer, Alan Siegel, has publicly said he used picture of West as the inspiration.
