Kanye West Stuns on Topic of Slavery: ‘That Sounds Like a Choice’

Kanye West

Rapper Kanye West expressed a very unconventional take on slavery on Tuesday when he met with TMZ.

According to a clip released by the celebrity news outlet, West appeared to argue that because slavery existed for so long, black people must have allowed it to happen.

“When you hear about slavery for 400 years … for 400 years?! That sound[s] like a choice,” he told TMZ founder Harvey Levin.

Watch his interview below:

He seemed to express incredulity at the fact that there were so many enslaved African-Americans and that they didn’t end the institution of slavery.

“You was there for 400 years, and it’s all of y’all?” he said.

West went on to suggest that people use the term “prison” instead of “slavery” because “slavery” focused too much on black people.

“Prison is something that unites us as one race,” he said. ”[…] It’s like we’re mentally imprisoned.”

West caught a lot of backlash last week after he tweeted his support for President Donald Trump:

When asked about his activism, West said it was an outgrowth of his “subconscious.”

“It was a feeling I had. You know, people were taught how to think. We’re taught how to feel. We don’t know how to think for ourselves. We don’t know how to feel for ourselves,” he said.

At one point during the interview, he also said, “I just love Trump. That’s my boy.”
