RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) – Richmond Police say a 17-year-old was killed in a shooting Sunday night, in Mosby Court.

Officers say J-Mari R. Saunders was shot around 7 p.m. in the 2000 block of Accommodation Street. He was rushed to the hospital, but died hours later.

Saunders was shot and killed while walking to the corner store, according to his family. He was just a block away from his home.

Relatives of Saunders says he was shot six times in the back. Medics tried to revive him several times, but he was not able to pull through.

Saunders’ mother, Rochella Saunders, said her son will always live within her. J’Mari also leaves behind two young sisters.

His mother says she’s still trying to grip what’s happened, her only son gunned down when just moments before, he said he’d be right back.

“I asked him where he was going. He said, ‘lady, I’m going to the store.’ And I said ‘okay, hurry up and come back in the house because I want you in the house.’ He said ‘lady, I’m going to the store and coming back to the house.’ I’m like, ‘OK,” his mother said.

GoFundMe has been set up to help Saunders’ family.

This comes after another shooting on that same stretch of Accommodation Street, two hours before. Police say another man had been shot on the 2100 block and was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Detectives say it’s too early to determine whether the two shootings off Accommodation Street were related.

A man was also shot and killed Saturday evening, off of the 3100 block of Midlothian Turnpike. That was followed by two additional midday shootings Sunday, also on the southside, that left two men with life threatening injuries.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 804-780-1000 or use the P3 Tips app.
