26-year-old Kendell Jerrell Morris has found himself sentenced to 27 years in a Texas correctional facility for the unintended killing of 24-year-old Robert Cooley III, as reported by Law and Crime on Saturday, December 23, 2023.
Morris’s misguided attempt to exact revenge on his child’s mother’s new boyfriend led to a tragic case of mistaken identity, exposing the consequences of a vengeful journey driven by adversarial conversations.
On May 4, 2020, Morris went on a perilous 250-mile drive from Houston to Arlington fueled by the intent to murder the boyfriend of his child’s mother.
However, a grave error unfolded when Morris, acting on limited information about the boyfriend’s appearance, fatally shot Robert Cooley III, who was not the intended target.
Phil Sorrells, the Tarrant County Criminal District Attorney, stated, “He thought he saw the boyfriend and opened fire, killing Robert Cooley III, who was not the boyfriend.”
Court records revealed Morris had engaged in several “adversarial conversations” with the intended target over the phone.
Despite never meeting the new boyfriend in person, Morris was driven by a basic physical description that the man was Black with dreadlocks.
This limited information catalyzed a fatal drive, illustrating the volatile nature of their interactions.

Driven by animosity, Morris arrived at the Arlington residence where he believed the new boyfriend lived.
The witness residing with the boyfriend reported seeing a 2008 white Nissan Altima, Morris’s vehicle, parked in the apartment complex lot in the early morning of May 4, 2020.
Unfortunately, the fatal shooting took place later at the exact location, forever changing the lives of those involved.
Shortly after the tragic incident, Morris was apprehended by a Texas State Police trooper.
An AR-15 rifle, believed to be the weapon used in the shooting, was recovered from inside Morris’s vehicle.
The swift response by law enforcement ensured Morris’s capture, leading to the subsequent legal proceedings that resulted in his conviction for one count of murder.
The Tarrant County jury delivered a 27-year sentence for Morris’s role in the killing of Robert Cooley III.
Morris’s quest for retribution not only claimed an innocent life but also resulted in a lengthy prison term that will forever alter the direction of his future.
