It is often said that we can only play the hand that we are dealt.  Well this young brother was dealt a hand that many of us would have simply folded on but he said I will make the best out of it and fight until I cant fight anymore.

A young rapper by the name of JayAre who was a member of the group Cali Swag has died from complications stemming from his battle with the infamous Sickle Cell Anemia.  Sickle Cell Anemia is a severe hereditary form of anemia in which a mutated form of hemoglobin distorts the red blood cells into a crescent shape at low oxygen levels. It is most common among those of African descent.  Because It affects so many of us, it is hard for me to believe that there are not more of us out fighting the cause for this and getting the word out

JayAre and the rest of his friends with Cali Swag taught the world how to do a dance that even old white women were finding themselves unable to not try.  It was a fun some along with a dance from some young men that appeared to just love life.

According to one of the guys in the group JayAre died Friday as a result of losing his batting with Sickle Cell.

Jay suffered from sickle cell anemia and was hospitalized Thursday for unknown reasons, this according to MTV,    Hours later he went into into cardiac arrest and died.

General Da Smoove — another member of CSD — tweeted last night, “Sickle cell took my brother away from me today.”

Smoove adds, “With that being said I’m proud to know that with that disease he made the best of his life … I jus(sp) saw my bro literally fight for his life I told him ‘I love you bro’ hope’n he heard me.”download (10)

Sadly, Jay is not the first member of Cali Swag to die … in 2011, CSD member M-Bone was murdered in a drive-by shooting.

For as sad as this is though, we have to use his death to get the message out about Sickle Cell Anemia as it takes countless lives of young black men and women every year in the united states with little to no outcry.  Here are a few facts about Sickle Cell Anemia

Sickle cell anemia facts

  • Sickle cell anemia is an inherited disorder of the hemoglobin in blood.
  • Sickle cell anemia requires the inheritance of two sickle cell genes.
  • Sickle cell trait, which is the inheritance of one sickle gene, almost never causes problems.
  • Virtually all of the major symptoms of sickle cell anemia are the direct result of the abnormally shaped sickled red blood cells blocking the flow of blood.
  • The current treatment of sickle cell anemia is directed primarily toward managing the individual features of the illness as they occur.

What is sickle cell anemia?

Sickle cell anemia (sickle cell disease) is a disorder of the blood caused by an inherited abnormal hemoglobin (the oxygen-carrying protein within the red blood cells). The abnormal hemoglobin causes distorted (sickled) red blood cells. The sickled red blood cells are fragile and prone to rupture. When the number of red blood cells decreases from rupture (hemolysis), anemia is the result. This condition is referred to as sickle cell anemia. The irregular sickled cells can also block blood vessels causing tissue and organ damage and pain.

Sickle cell anemia is one of the most common inherited blood anemias. The disease primarily affects Africans and African Americans. It is estimated that in the United States, some 90,000 to 100,000 Americans are afflicted with sickle cell anemia. Overall, current estimates are that one in 500 U.S. African American births is affected with sickle cell anemia.
