A Georgia mother accused of using an imposter to pose as her mentally disabled son in order to steal $200,000 has been arrested, police said yesterday.

Yvonne Longmire, 58, of Lawrenceville in Gwinnett County, surrendered on March 1 and was booked into a local detention center, officials said. Police appealed for the public’s help after it emerged that the woman’s son had not been physically seen in several years.

The whereabouts and condition of the 20-year-old, Lee Earnest Longmire, remained unknown as of yesterday. Police said both the mother and her attorney Robert Brooks claimed that he is “OK” but confirmed that they have not revealed his location as ordered by the state.

Longmire was being held without bond.

Last Wednesday, Gwinnett County police told local media a warrant had been put out for the woman’s arrest. A release said a lead detective had discovered the attempted scam in January this year after talking to the law firm acting as a conservator for the son’s trust fund.

It is alleged that the mother used another man—Maurice Ford, 23—to pose as her son in front of a probate court and a physician. The ruse was an attempt to convince them the son no longer had a severe mental disability and no longer needed a conservator for his fund, police said.

At the time, investigators believe that Ford not only pretended to be the son but also gave false testimony and used fraudulently obtained documents to support the attempted scam.

The court granted $200,000 to the mother and the imposter but before it could be withdrawn the conservator became suspicious of the son’s real identity and contacted the authorities.

An investigation was launched and the son became a ward of the state and was provided a guardian through the Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS). After warrants were issued last week Ford was arrested in Arizona and is currently awaiting extradition.Related Stories

“Several attempts have been made to have in person contact with Lee but they have been to no avail,” police said.

The mother was charged with perjury, forgery, identity theft, theft by deception, criminal solicitation, and exploitation of an at-risk adult.

“If anyone has information on the exact whereabouts of Lee Earnest Longmire they are encouraged to call detectives at 770-513-5300. To remain anonymous, tipsters can contact Crime Stoppers at 404-577-TIPS (8477) or visit stopcrimeATL.com,” officials added. The suspects’ mugshots were posted online by the Gwinnett County Police Department yesterday.
