SEBRING, Fla. (WFLA) — A former Department of Children and Families employee was arrested after she allegedly abused and killed her adopted teen daughter, who was found unresponsive in a Sebring home, according to the Highlands County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies found the 13-year-old girl unresponsive early Friday morning on the floor of a home on Bianca Street.
Diane Natasha Mack, 34, told deputies she found the girl unresponsive Thursday morning, but later said it was about 3 p.m., according to the sheriff’s office.
Mack reportedly drove four other children who lived in the home to Titusville Friday morning and drove back to Sebring before she called for help, deputies said.
“As bad as that is, it only gets worse,” Sheriff Paul Blackman said in a statement. “The girl, who was nude except for a diaper, had clearly been severely abused. She was extremely emaciated and obviously malnourished. Her body was covered in wounds in all stages of healing, including open lacerations that were clearly recently suffered.”
Investigators found that the girl was home-schooled and restrained to the garage door, where she was monitored from a camera inside the garage, deputies said.
Mack allegedly used pool chlorine to destroy evidence in the garage before she called 911, Blackman said.
Blackman called it a “horrific crime.”
“This is one of the most disturbing crime scenes I have encountered in more than 30 years of law enforcement,” Blackman said. “There are no words I can say that can truly convey the nightmare that this child’s life must have been.”
Blackman said it’s a parent’s job to protect their children from harm. Mack had previously worked for the Department of Children and Families and as a guardian ad litem.
“That someone whose job it was to look after the welfare of children could treat their own child in this manner is simply beyond belief,” Blackman said.
Mack was charged with first-degree murder while engaged in aggravated child abuse, aggravated child abuse, kidnapping, and destroying evidence, deputies said.

Jump into a conversationNo the father doesn’t have to pay child support once he gives up his rights. That’s the point of giving up rights, just like if a woman gives up her child for adoption she doesn’t pay child support either because it’s no longer your child anymore. Why would a woman pay for a child that someone else adopted
