(WWJ) Three people have been charged in the shooting death of a Flint security guard in a dispute over a face mask policy.

Calvin Munerlyn, who worked as a guard at a Family Dollar Store on Fifth Ave., was shot in the head in the store’s doorway last Friday, and later died in the hospital.

Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said investigators believe Munerlyn, 43, was killed after he told a shopper she must wear a mask in the store.

“Mr. Munnerlyn had gotten into a verbal altercation with an unknown black female over not wearing a mask before the shooting had taken place,” Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said, at a news conference Monday. “There is surveillance video confirming that altercation.”

Leyton said the following people have been charged with first degree murder in the case: 44-year-old Larry Edward Teague Jr., 43-year old Sharmel Lashe Teague — identified as the woman who initially argued with Munnerlyn  — and 23-year-old Ramonyea Travon Bishop.

Authorities believe Bishop was the shooter.

According to police, at approximately 1:40 p.m. Friday, Sharmel Teague and Munerlyn began arguing when Munerlyn told her she needed to wear a face mask while inside the store. It’s alleged that after Sharmel Teague yelled and spit at Munerlyn, the guard asked her to leave and told a cashier not to serve her.

Sharmel Teague left the store, police said; but a short time later two men — later identified as Larry Teague and Bishop — showed up and confronted Munerlyn.

They argued, it’s alleged, before Bishop pulled a gun and shot Munerlyn in the back of the head.

Sharmel and Larry Teague are married and Bishop is Sharrnel’s son, according to authorities. Sharmel Teague was in custody Monday afternoon, while Larry Teague and Bishop remained at large. Tips are wanted to track them down.

GoFundMe page has been set up for Munerlyn, a father of eight who was known by the nickname “Super Duper.”

“Duper was a hard working, father and husband who lost his life while doing his job securing the place of business and asking all customers to wear a mask for our own safety as well as others,” reads a message on the GoFundMe page. “He leaves behind 8 amazing kids, a super loving wife, & his wonderful mother.”

The “Donations for Duper” fundraiser has already raised more than $22,000 toward a $100,000 goal.

It is required that Michiganders wear masks when in an enclosed public space, under Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s April 24  executive order to combat the spread of coronavirus.TAGS:  Coronavirussecurity guard killedfatal shootingNewsletterAll LocalFlint
